covid-19 response - indoor air quality

Spring 2020 - Spring 2021

  • Used 100% outside air to condition our spaces whenever possible, as we have historically done
  • Doubled or significantly increased the amount of fresh air provided on winter and summer days when we could not use 100% outside air (starting March 2020).
  • Ran building fans one hour before school start and ½ hour after finish to flush the buildings (March 2020)
  • Increased HVAC filter efficiencies from MERV 8 to MERV 10 or 11 (higher filter efficiencies are detrimental to systems not designed for them) (starting Spring 2020).
  • Checked the CO2 levels in classrooms in every school in the district to ensure proper indoor air quality (Upon student return in April 2021).
  • Researched and eliminated many air disinfection systems based on potential danger or poor value to the district including in-classroom HEPA systems (February 2020 - Ongoing).
  • Piloted an Ultraviolet Air Disinfection system to ensure value to the district (December 2020 – March 2021).

School Year 2021 -  2022

  • Continue using 100% fresh air to ventilate when outside air temps are pleasant.

  • Continue increased fresh air ratios when outside air must be conditioned.

  • Continue to run fans before and after school to flush our buildings.

  • Continue using the more efficient air filters.

  • Continue to sample CO2 levels in classrooms across the district.

  • Continue to monitor new technologies and guidelines for Indoor Air Quality.

  • Implement installation of Ultraviolet Air Disinfection equipment inside of HVAC equipment across the district.

Facilities Documents

2012 Bond

In November 2012, voters approved a $99 million bond package for facilities. A majority of the 2013-2016 Bond Program is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2015 with only 5 projects scheduled for completion in 2016. Almost $17 million worth of "quick start" projects will be completed in the summer of 2013. See the Scheduled Bond Scope document that identifies the respective phased completion date for each committed bond scope item. The bond scope of work is packaged to maximize design, bidding and construction efficiencies. To see the bid packaging select the Bid Packaging Schedule by Year (2013, 2014, 2015, or 2016) that correlates with the phase as identified in the Scheduled Bond Scope document. See the 2013 Phase Status of Projects to review the overall progress of the 2013 phase of the bond program. This document shows the number of projects and the dollar value by each design and construction phase for the 2013 scope of work.

Capital Asset Advisory Committee

In 2010, the Board of Education authorized the establishment of the Capital Asset Advisory Committee in accordance with Policies EL-8 and FB, both of which deal with facility condition and long-range facility planning. Learn more about the Capital Asset Advisory Committee.
