We believe that every child has the right to receive whatever he/she/they need to develop his/her/their academic and social/emotional potential to thrive every day.
Talent Pool is a group of students who demonstrate an advanced / exceptional ability in a particular area, but at this time do not meet the formal criteria for gifted identification. (CDE Identification guidebook, 2018)
The GT department wants to better identify high potential students, including students among minority, English Language Learner and Free/Reduced Lunch populations utilizing local (school-based) norms, and to provide appropriately challenging instructional resources and strategies for these students to actualize their potential.

HOW CAN I REFER MY CHILD FOR GIFTED IDENTIFICATION OR TALENT POOL?

Anyone can refer a student for GT Identification/Talent Pool and we invite input from all  teachers and school staff, including ESL teachers, Art/Music/PE teachers, special education teachers, and administrators. We welcome family referrals and also confer with Family Engagement Liaisons and school secretaries.Jeffco has developed a variety of screening procedures for conducting formal GT identification and Talent Pool inclusion. Please see our GT Identification webpage for more information.

WHAT ARE LOCAL NORMS?

A Local Norm means using a school’s data* rather than national data. This means that a school will gather data at each grade level looking for high growth. Some schools will use the top 10% performance on certain assessments. Other schools may use 80th percentile or higher in performance on these assessments.

WHAT WILL MY CHILD BE DOING?

Students will engage in various enriched instruction depending on their school. Some schools may have cohorts where Talent Pool students are grouped together for at least part of their school day. Some schools promote greater depth of questioning, while others may have specific resources for gifted/advanced learners to supplement their normal curriculum, and some may offer extension or after school enrichment.
